Luneta Park is a popular landmark all over the country and is visited by thousands of tourists every year. Formerly known as "Bagumbayan," this historical site is a blind witness to the assassination of Dr. Jose Protacio Rizal in 1896.
As customary, Filipinos spent their Christmas eve with a bang. Most families stayed on the comforts of their home, while some choose to celebrate outside. This year, thousands of families spent their Christmas eve in Luneta Park. However, they left a nasty 'remembrance' after the festivities.
In less than a week before the 122nd death anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal, many people desecrated his landmark. Many families who spent their Christmas eve on Luneta park left their trash all over the historic place. In doing so, they have disrespected and mocked our own national hero.
In the early morning after Christmas eve, street sweepers and park rangers were met with mounds of garbage. The whole 60-hectares of land were littered with trash, plastic bottles, picnic mats, disposable cups, and many more. The ornamental gardens and wide lawns looked like a massive dump site.
After celebrating, the people neglected their surroundings and didn't even have the heart to take care of their trash. This heartbreaking sight went viral on social media. What's more frustrating is it happened just a few days before Dr. Jose Rizal's death anniversary.
Many people condemned the massive littering that happened. Some netizens even suggested to close the park temporarily, just so it won't be desecrated by irresponsible visitors again.
