It is undeniable that the newly-crowned Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray possesses intelligence and sensitivity, which gave her the winning answer during the Question and Answer portion. Many people were touched after Catriona shared her experience with the children in the slums of Tondo, Manila.
Even before she joined Miss Universe and Binibining Pilipinas, Catriona Gray has been known to maintain a neutral stance on politics. In the Philippines, taking about political beliefs is like skating on thin ice, especially if you're a well-known personality. But Catriona managed not to offend others by keeping her political beliefs personal.
However, since she is now a Miss Universe winner, many people felt the Catriona owed it to the people to be politically correct. One of them is writer Raissa Robles, who expressed the following statement on Twitter:
“When @catrionaelisa comes home, I wonder if a reporter would dare to ask her – Your heart goes out to the children of Tondo. How do you feel about children from Tondo becoming ‘collateral damage’ in the President’s war on dr***s? Do you agree they should be treated as such?”
This statement divided social media. Some agreed with Robles in finding out Catriona's stance, while other claimed that Robles exhibits "crab mentality." Among them is a Facebook user named Bubuy Balangue, who claimed that Robles is "bursting everyone's bubbles."
After receiving a backlash on Twitter, Robles immediately responded with another statement claiming that her first Tweet was misunderstood by the public:
“You misunderstand my tweet. I am not at all questioning what catrionaelisa has done in Tondo. I want to know her thoughts on EJKs of children, described as collateral damage. That’s all. Since her advocacy is poverty and children.”
