Two days after the Miss Universe pageant, the entire country is still reeling from Catriona Gray's success. Yet not even after a week since her coronation, the 24-year-old beauty queen from Bicol is already facing some criticisms and backlash on social media,
For many, the beauty queen’s elaborate answer during the Q and A portion did not sit well with others. Reminiscing her days in Tondo, Manila, Gray wished that she can use her power as Miss Universe to help poor kids from the slum and see the “beauty” in poverty.
Apparently, many people took Catriona’s answer the wrong way. Some people even went as far as saying that the 24-year-olf beauty queen is romanticizing and glorifying poverty. Because of this, Catriona’s fans quickly came to the rescue to defend their idol.
Among them is Tom Kuegler, an American vlogger more popularly known as “Finding Tom.” In his video, Kuegler defended Catriona Gray from her critics. He pointed out the hipocrisy of people who are criticizing Catriona, but have never even helped the poor themselves:
“Most of the people that are coming after her probably have never helped anybody in poverty their life. How can you be romanticizing poverty when you literally say it’s poor and very sad.”
Moreover, Kuegler also claimed that some critics are just dampening the celebration for Catriona Gray’s win. Kuegler, who is currently residing at the Philippines, explained that Catriona delivered her answer in good faith, and people should not give senseless meaning to her otherwise good answer.
